Policy on Faculty Notification Regarding Student Absences Due to Illness/Emergency

In order to provide a more focused service to students, Campus Health Services will notify the Office of the Dean of the College when illness or incapacity necessitates extended student absence from class work, i.e., beyond an instructional week. This information is provided to the Office of the Dean of the College when:

  1. a student is unable to attend classes for an extended period of time;
  2. a student is hospitalized;
  3. a student is recovering from illness at home.

Occasional and periodic absences are provided for through the existing policy administered in the Office of the Dean of the College and stated in the Faculty Handbook under Classroom regulation, Appendix VI, pages 57-58, and in the Student Handbook under Class Attendance, page 10.

Students remain individually responsible for each class absence and are expected to provide instructors and the Office of the Dean of the College with valid reasons for absences beyond those mentioned in the existing policy in the Faculty Handbook and the Student Handbook. The Office of the Dean of the College will not routinely provide faculty with information regarding isolated instances of student absences.

When illness or emergency prevent a student from taking major scheduled examinations, the student should notify the instructor and the Office of the Dean of the College prior to the time of the examination. Instructors should inform students how and when they may be reached in the event of an emergency. The Office of the Dean of the College and the Campus Directory will not provide students with instructors' unlisted telephone numbers. If the student is incapable of contacting the instructor or the Dean's Office prior to the time of an examination, the student is responsible at the earliest reasonable time to inform them.
